Sherri Thal holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music (Summa cum Laude) from California State University, East Bay (1994). Sherri has taught and performed in the US, the UK and in the Middle East. She handled the improvisational musical duties for Playback Theater Hawaii, and has been the musical director of both The HICCUP Children’s Circus (Hawaii) and the Belfast Community Circus (Northern Ireland), creating their first ever youth bands and co-composing original music scores for their shows (1997,1999). In early 2011 she embarked on a songwriting adventure with her graduating 6th grade class that resulted in a live performance/recording of eight original pop songs co-composed by members of the class.

A talented vocal and musical arranger as well as a composer, Ms. Thal put on her “arranging hat” for the first Lava Jam Band CD “In the Beginning.” Additionally she played violin and percussion throughout the disc, which contains original songs about the natural history of the Hawaiian Islands. Sherri also played violin and sang on the all original, island folk CD, “This Life” by Intowishin’. She co-penned the title track as well as “Touch Me Gently” with Cynthia Warner. With her partner, Brent Magstadt, Sherri co-produced a four song, original music EP entitled “The Elementalz,” which features her song, “Hello.”

Sherri has been an accomplished performer of classical, jazz, rock, and acoustic music since 1980. Her venues have run the gamut from the San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir to guest violin player with Michelle Shocked, as well as a choral soprano in the University of Hawaii’s performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in March of 2011. Sherri has graced the Hilo Palace Theater stage for roles in the musicals “Hair” and “Gypsy.” Currently an exceptional music educator in both the public (HAAS PCS Elementary General Music, grades 1-6) and private sectors (voice, violin, theory), Ms. Thal continues to perform, compose and arrange with her partner, Brent Magstadt, in their group, The Elementalz, and on her own, with genres ranging from Classical to Country Folk and from instrumentals suitable for film and T.V. to four part vocal harmony.

He performed and recorded with the likes of Michael Gibbs, Phil Wilson, and Randy Sabien. During the summers, in between school years, he taught and worked as a drummer at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Ohio, and taught jazz percussion at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. He received the “Mercer Ellington Jazz Masters Award” from the Berklee College of Music in 1981 as the drummer most “in demand” at the Berklee Performance Center.

After college, Kelly went abroad for a year – living primarily in Denmark. He met and played with then-expatriate Thad Jones, who became a major musical influence on him. One of his good friends and former band mate in Scandinavia is Ola Bengtsson, professor at the Stockholm Conservatory
of Music.

When Kelly returned to the San Francisco Bay Area from Europe, he was hired as an instructor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He taught harmony, theory, arranging and ear training. After two years, he decided that teaching was not for him. He took a sabbatical, from which he never returned, to play on cruise ships in the Caribbean. After a year of cruise ships, he returned to dry land and went back to work for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. The Camp sent Kelly overseas again to teach in southern Germany. He also traveled around Europe as The Camp’s recruiter.

In 1985, after many years away, Kelly decided to return to the San Francisco Bay Area and began establishing himself as a local musician. He worked in almost every major and minor venue in the San Francisco Bay Area for the next twenty-four years until the present day. His list of San Francisco venues include: the Fillmore, the Great American Music Hall, the Herbst Theater, the Castro Theater, the Luther Burbank Center, the Lesher Theater, and the Moscone Center.

Kelly has performed with Thad Jones, Keely Smith, Zakiya Hooker, Michael Manring, Kim Nalley among many others.
